                              Emergency Coordinator - Information

The Smith County Office of Emergency Management has recently updated the Smith County Hazard Mitigation Plan for 2026. Because the City of Hideaway would rely on Smith County support and assistance during a large-scale disaster or emergency, our community is included in this regional plan. The Hazard Mitigation Plan is reviewed and updated every five years.

The plan focuses on natural hazards that could affect our area and identifies ways to reduce long-term risks to people, property, and infrastructure through mitigation efforts and preparedness planning.

A FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plan is required for communities to qualify for certain federal grant opportunities through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) programs. These grants may provide funding directly to participating jurisdictions for projects identified in the plan that help reduce future disaster impacts.

The mitigation section of the plan is designed to identify potential projects and sustainable actions that participating communities may wish to pursue in the future. These ideas are based on local needs, community priorities, and possible opportunities for future funding.

It is important to understand that inclusion of a project in the plan does not obligate the community to complete or fund that project. The listed projects simply represent ideas or concepts that could be considered if grant funding or other resources become available. The listed projects for the City of Hideaway are on pages 43-47.

In addition, FEMA requires estimated project costs to be included in the plan. These figures are preliminary estimates only and are not binding. If the community decides to pursue grant funding for a project, detailed project scopes and updated cost estimates would be developed at that time..
